From waste to resource: Training young researchers on developing innovative, circular solutions for wastewater treatment sludge - INCLUE

Tiago Martins obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from NOVA University of Lisbon (Portugal) in 2020 and his Master’s degree in Sanitary Engineering from the same university in 2022, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. After 2 years as a researcher at the NOVA University of Lisbon, working on treated wastewater reuse, Tiago Martins was invited to be a lecturer at the University of Shanghai (China). Still in 2024, Tiago Martins started his PhD in Engineering Technology at KU Leuven under the Marie-Sklodowska Curie Action/Horizon Europe INCLUE project, under the supervision of Nadine Boelee (Nijhuis Saur Industries, the Netherlands) and the promotion of Professor Raf Dewil (KU Leuven, Belgium) and Merle de Kreuk (TU Delft, the Netherlands). To date, Tiago Martins has authored and co-authored 12 publications comprising articles and book chapters. Although his main focus has been on wastewater treatment technologies, Tiago is currently concentrating his work on the recovery of metals from water treatment processes sludges, though electrochemical processes.

In INCLUE project, Tiago works on Electrochemical Treatment Of Sludge To Recover Metals And Improve Sludge Properties at at KU Leuven.
