From waste to resource: Training young researchers on developing innovative, circular solutions for wastewater treatment sludge - INCLUE

On a sunny day filled with curiosity and enthusiasm, Tiago Martins, a Doctoral Candidate (DC3) at the INCLUE Project and hosted at Nijhuis Saur Industries, joined colleagues and their families for the company’s annual Family Day. This event opens the workplace to employees’ loved ones and brings science and industry closer to home.

Held at the heart of Nijhuis Saur Industries, the event gave visitors (from toddlers to grandparents) a unique behind-the-scenes look at what the company does to make water cleaner and the planet more sustainable. Children played games and explored the facilities, families engaged with interactive exhibits, and employees proudly showed the innovations they contribute daily.

Among the many highlights of the day was Tiago’s passionate engagement with the young attendees. As part of the R&D team, he shared insights into the cutting-edge research he’s conducting on sludge valorisation, an often overlooked yet vital part of creating a circular and sustainable water system.

Even with a Dutch language barrier, Tiago found creative ways to connect with the children through simple explanations, vivid demonstrations, and universal enthusiasm. “It was amazing to see how curious kids are when you talk about basic things like water, and how we clean it,” he reflected. “It’s a challenge, but also a joy, to explain these complex topics to the future generations.”

Events like Family Day highlight not only the technical excellence of Nijhuis Saur Industries but also its commitment to education and community. Tiago’s participation showcased how research isn’t confined to labs, it’s part of a much bigger conversation about environmental responsibility, innovation, and the future we are all shaping together.

From talking about sludge and sustainability to sparking the imaginations of future scientists, Tiago brought both knowledge and heart to this special occasion.

We’re proud to see our researchers bringing their work into the public eye and inspiring young minds to think differently about water and its immense value in our world.
