From waste to resource: Training young researchers on developing innovative, circular solutions for wastewater treatment sludge - INCLUE

Erika Sinisgalli (DC9 PhD candidate at INRAE) is the first PhD candidate in the INCLUE project to embark on a secondment at Nijhuis Saur Industries. With her extensive background in optimising anaerobic digestion and biomass pre-treatments, Erika is now taking on a new challenge. At Nijhuis, she will be focused on understanding the source and handling principles of sludge samples, investigating the impact of electrochemical treatment on sludge nutrients’ availability and pollutants’ removal. Plus, she will be in contact with industrial experts and engineers to enlarge her network and get in touch with professionals in the sector, unlocking key ideas on fundamental aspects to be considered for the development of a multi-criteria analysis and unveiling practical implications that might come from the building of the decision tool.

Her work deepens scientific knowledge and paves the way for understanding the future of sludge processing, encouraging to see sludge as a valuable resource from which obtain nutrients and by-products of interest, rather than something to dispose of. It’s inspiring to see how Erika’s passion and expertise drive innovative solutions in wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery. We can’t wait to see the results of her research and how it will contribute to a more sustainable future.

Congratulations to Erika on this fantastic opportunity and wishing her all the best during her secondment at Nijhuis!
